One of the younger guitar-hero bands has a new CD. Evan Johnson (guitar), Nick Johnson (drums) and Shane Verwey's (bass) Forest Fire has followed up it's debut CD very admirably. "Lighter Fluid" proves that it's songs as much as chops that stokes the bands passions. There is definitely no sophomore slump on the disc produced and fleshed out by local good-guy-made-good Gary Tanin. This may be because the guitarist standout, Evan Johnson, is no sophomore. He's only a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While mind-boggling speed and precision on the guitar are still at the forefront, other sensibilities in writing are now pushing their way forward. Subtle nuances and textures are springing up like brush fires around the blaze that is Johnson. Backed by the very capable rhythm work of his brother and Verwey, it may be impossible to tame Forest Fire by their next disc.
